Upcoming Worship Themes
February 12, Primary Lessons. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27. Tuesday is the New Hampshire primary for candidates seeking to "run" for President. Apostle Paul offers suggestions for the proper way to run, whether it is for President or for life. 2nd Sunday Benevolence--loose plate monies go toward benevolence.
February 19, A Broader View. Mark 9:2-9 & 2 Kings 2:1-12. Transfiguration Sunday: Peter, James & John view Jesus in God's light. The mystery of the prophet Elijah's exit from this life, and that of Jesus' transfiguration experience, pulls us toward living more deeply a life of faith, that is, a greater reality beyond what our physical senses perceive.
February 22, Ash Wednesday Service, Coming Home to God's Embrace. 7:00-7:30 p.m. Fanny Crosby's hymn "Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling," and Jesus' parable of the willful child (Luke 15: 11-24) provide the setting for one of Christianity's time-honored starts to the season of Lent--Ash Wednesday. "Coming Home to God's Embrace" is the theme of this abbreviated but deeply meaningful service.
February 26, To Hell and Back. 1 Peter 3:18-22. First Sunday in Lent: Holy Communion served in the pews. The Apostle's Creed declares that Jesus "descended into hell." Some support for this phrase seems to come from our scripture lesson. But what does it all mean for us today? Some clue can be found in the article "Standing in the Shadows" in February's issue of our church newsletter, "The Mosaic."
